The study of the igneous rocks has hitherto largely consisted in an analysis of their mineralogical and chemical composition, with the special intent to produce a satisfactory nomenclature and classification of the rocks as they occur throughout the world. This systematic petrography, though still pursued by a great number of workers, is. pre-existing rock type, the protolith, in a process called metamorphism, which means "change in form". The protolith is subjected to heat (greater than degrees Celsius) and/or extreme pressure causing profound physical and/or chemical change. The protolith may be sedimentary rock, igneous rock or another older metamorphic rock.
Igneous rock may form with crystallization to form granular, crystalline rocks, or without crystallization to form natural glasses. Igneous rocks occur in a wide range of geological settings: shields, platforms, orogens, basins, large igneous provinces, extended crust and oceanic crust.
